USDC Hosted High Information Content Conference Focuses on the Search for Perfect Image Capture, Transmission and Display

Conference to Define Progress and Set Timetable

August 19, 2004 (San Jose, Calif.) – The United States Display Consortium (USDC), a public/private partnership chartered with developing the flat panel display (FPD) industry infrastructure, today announced the topics and agenda for the third annual High Information Content Display Systems Conference, September 14-15, 2004 in Arlington, Virginia. The attendees at the conference will focus on analyzing whether “20-20 vision” can be provided without limits of distance, time or wavelength, so that one can see perfect images of any scene or event from one’s office, living room or airplane seat. The barriers to providing such images will be identified and strategies explored to remove the obstacles.

"Recent advances in sensor technology, digital communications and flat panel displays have provided a capability to capture, transmit and show pictures with image quality close to that of human vision,” stated Dr. J. Norman Bardsley, Director of Technology and Roadmaps at USDC. “This is currently possible through expensive systems, such as those used to bring pictures from the Mars Rovers, but soon will be achievable to all using consumer equipment. Previous conferences have clearly demonstrated that the required components are emerging, but that coordination is needed between the many groups involved in hardware and software developments."

The conference will investigate the latest developments in using three-dimensional and fully-immersive displays to increase the amount of information transmitted to the viewer.

Setting the stage with a look at the issues confronting the digital cinema industry will be Richard Sehlin, chief technology officer of Eastman Kodak’s Entertainment Imaging Division. Beyond the keynotes, the conference will have seven sessions, encompassing more than twenty-five speakers and a demonstration area for hands-on discussions. The sessions include:

- Surveillance Applications & Video Networks - Medical Imaging - Enabling Technologies - Simulation Applications - Imaging Systems Evaluation Methods - 3D Display Systems - From CAVES to Collaborative Visualization and Desktop Analysis

Presenting companies include IBM, Kodak, NASA Ames, Planar Systems, Boeing and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories. Corporate co-sponsors include SMART Technologies and DisplaySearch. Federal agency co-sponsors of the USDC symposium include the Air Force Research Laboratory, the Army Research Laboratory, and the Office of Naval Research.

The conference will be held at the Hilton Arlington Hotel and Towers in Arlington , VA. To learn more about the conference, sponsorship opportunities and to register, please visit the USDC website at www.usdc.org.

About the U.S. Display Consortium
The U.S. Display Consortium is an industry-led public/private partnership providing a common platform for flat panel display and flexible microelectronics manufacturers and developers, FPD users, and the supplier base. Headquartered in San Jose, Calif., the consortium’s primary mission is to fund supply-chain projects and share the results with USDC member companies. The USDC also provides a communication channel among industry, government and the financial communities for display issues; sponsors workshops to broaden the impact of technological developments; and educates consumers on the importance of displays in providing access to information technology. About DisplaySearch
The Worldwide Leader in Market Research and Consulting was founded due to dissatisfaction with reports from existing display-related market research firms. DisplaySearch’s founder, Ross Young, believed existing English-language reports lacked sufficient depth and analysis due to their analysts’ lack of industry experience, absence of Asian language skills, lack of a food chain approach, and excessive focus on the North American market.
