U.S. DISPLAY CONSORTIUM AWARDS CONTRACT
TO FSI INTERNATIONAL FOR ADVANCED DISPLAY PROCESSING EQUIPMENT
FSI to Develop Cleaning System for Display Manufacturing
- The U.S. Display Consortium (USDC), a public/private partnership developing the flat panel (FPD) manufacturing equipment and materials supply chain, today announced a contract award to FSI International (Chaska, MN) to develop an enhanced cleaning system for display applications. The contract is a cost share program between USDC and FSI.
FSI International is a global supplier of processing equipment used at key production steps to manufacture microelectronics, including semiconductor integrated circuits and thin film heads for the computer hard drive industry. Their support products are used in the technology areas of surface conditioning, and microlithography.
Under contract to USDC, FSI will explore the effectiveness of its CryoKinetic cleaning system for display applications. CryoKinetic cleaning uses high-velocity cryogenic
aerosols to dislodge particulate contamination from silicon wafers. Contaminants from deposition, plasma etches and other processes can interfere with subsequent patterning steps. The full range of available processing parameters will be explored in an effort to produce the most efficient particle and defect removal process for cleaning display substrates.
"This project will help us determine any special process conditions or tool design modifications that may be necessary to adapt existing cleaning technology to meet the specific needs of display technology," said Bob Pinnel, CTO of USDC. "FSI has a successful history of developing processing equipment and USDC is convinced this project will produce valuable results for the flat panel display industry."
"FSI is pleased to work with USDC on this project to develop our cleaning system for the manufacturing of high definition displays," said John Ely, President Surface Conditioning Division for FSI International. "Our expectation is that our CryoKenetic cleaning system will work for the display industry as it has for the semiconductor industry and result in increased product yields, a reduction of defects, and faster production of a new generation of display technology."
Senator Mark Dayton, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said, "I want to congratulate FSI International of Chaska for winning this important contract, which recognizes the innovative high technology industry that exists in Minnesota. I am hopeful that many more Minnesota companies and small businesses will be able to follow FSI International's lead, and obtain contracts and create jobs in our state."
Representative Mark Kennedy (R-MN) said, "Congratulations to FSI International for being selected by the U.S. Display Consortium for this significant contract award. FSI has proven itself to be a company on the leading edge of technological advancements, and I am pleased that they represent Minnesota as a leader in the growing flat panel display industry".
