USDC UNVEILS FORMAL AGENDA FOR UPCOMING FLEXIBLE MICROELECTRONICS AND DISPLAY CONFERENCE

SAN JOSE, Calif., January 9, 2003-The U.S. Display Consortium (USDC), a public/private partnership chartered with developing the flat panel display (FPD) industry infrastructure, today unveiled the formal agenda for its second annual Flexible Microelectronics and Display Workshop & Conference, to be held on February 3-4, 2003 in Phoenix, Ariz. The summit, which brings together leading industry, government, R&D and academic experts in one unique forum, will highlight the latest advancements and hurdles facing the evolution of flexible display and microelectronics technology. This year's agenda includes a strategic overview of both technology and market requirements, materials and manufacturing initiatives (including prospects for a roll-to-roll manufacturing paradigm), microelectronic backplanes and display technologies, as well as applications associated with the production of flexible devices.

"Last year's conference was a tremendous success as it helped raise overall awareness surrounding the significant growth potential this emerging market affords. Not only did it lead to the establishment of a formal technology roadmap, but it also drove substantial R&D funding geared toward bringing flexible microelectronics and displays to market fruition," said Bob Pinnel, USDC's chief technology officer. "We look forward to raising the bar with this year's conference-which features a stellar line-up of some of today's most recognized leaders in the FPD space-to better understand the latest advancements and hurdles the industry must address in order to speed commercialization of this exciting new technology."

The underlying purpose of this annual summit is to explore the current status of the technology, markets and applications for flexible displays; educate potential participants in supply-chain development program needs and goals; and identify future investment opportunities. New to this year's format are speakers from the printing, photovoltaic and PCB industries, who will present on the applications of flexible substrates and web-based processing within their respective industries in order to help the FPD industry learn from their experiences, both positive and negative.

Co-sponsors of the workshop include the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL), Cambridge Display Technology (CDT), DuPont Displays, Natick Soldier Center, Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) and Universal Display Corporation (UDC).

This year's keynote presentations include:

  • Analyses of Commercial Markets for Plastic Electronics, Tom McLean, Avecia UK

  • Perspectives on the Military Market for Flexible Displays, John Pellegrino, Ph.D., U.S. Army Research Laboratory USA

  • Web-Processing in the Real World, Steven Abbott, Ph.D., Autotype International

  • Flexible Microelectronics & Roll-to-Roll Cost Modeling, Abbie Gregg, AGI Inc.

The conference will feature an impressive line-up of more than 30 speakers including:

  • Abbie Gregg, Abbie Gregg, Inc.
