USDC FUNDS DISPLAY PROJECTS WITH ROCKWELL COLLINS

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 28, 2005 - The U.S. Display Consortium (USDC), a public/private partnership chartered with developing the supply chain for flat panel displays (FPDs), today announced two contract awards to Rockwell Collins of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. These awards continue to demonstrate USDC’s commitment to advanced display integration for military applications.

The first award to Rockwell Collins, with a cost shared budget of $977,000, is Phase II of an earlier contract award to study the effects of video and graphics latency in military avionics. Video latency refers to the delay between capture of a signal and the subsequent display of an image or a graphic. Although measured in fractions of a second, the delay can induce flight pilot errors resulting in loss of aircraft control.

Rockwell Collins has completed a study of the human factor implications of video and graphics latency and is ready to move to a simulation platform. The overall objective of this project is to provide a database on human factors systems requirements, testing protocols and display systems architectures whereby latency is minimized and operator error is reduced or eliminated. Rockwell Collins will undertake the project using flight simulators including their Advanced Display Concepts Laboratory.

he second award to Rockwell Collins is for a study and integration of organic light emitting diode displays (OLEDs) into defense-related applications. The project will examine and address the use of OLEDs in night vision imaging systems (NVIS), as well as display lifetime and color issues associated with OLEDs in rugged environments.

With these awards to Rockwell Collins, discernable progress is certainly being achieved in upgrading the display capability of our armed forces,” stated Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA). “Continued in-vestment in new technology, and leveraging government-industry partnerships, provide the right path for defense innovation.”

The USDC program is a collaborative effort of private industry and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, located in Adelphi, MD. The results of theses projects will be shared with military display integrators within the consortium.
