Dear Colleagues,

I’m pleased to announce that 2007 kicks off with a bang for USDC—but it also brings about the end to a very successful year for the consortium.

Just before the holidays, USDC’s board of directors unanimously agreed to launch an initiative focused on the emerging flexible, printed and organic (FPO) electronics market. This initiative is the first-of-its-kind in the U.S. and will provide a wide range of services to industry, academia and government in order to accelerate the development and growth of the FPO electronics industry. The board took this action to signal its support for the rapidly expanding FPO sector, while maintaining our core focus on driving the emerging displays and related imaging technologies markets, such as OLEDs, flexible displays, 3D displays and high-resolution imaging. Those interested in learning more about what this initiative entails can read further along in this issue. To this end, you’ll also find an interesting piece on the FPO market from regular contributor, Stephen Brennan of MCA.

Be sure to mark your calendars for the return of our two premier conferences, the Flexible Display and Microelectronics Conference (Feb. 5 – 8 in Phoenix) and our Displays & Emerging Electronics Investment Conference (March 1 in New York). Read on, or visit our website, to get information on the agenda, registration specifics and venue details.

This quarter’s issue also features articles on the debut of the LCD TV Association, which was launched at CES in January. And, for those interested in making a career move or retaining some new talent, then read on to learn more about our new online Career center, which is part of our commitment to provide value-added services to not only our members, but the industry at large.

As I mentioned above, 2007 has definitely started out in the right direction and it’s going to be a busy year ahead, so stay tuned for continued updates and progress on our recent activities.

That said, from all of us at USDC, we wish you a successful 2007—both professionally and personally.

Cheers,

Mike Ciesinski

It’s an economic reality, which engineers hate to concede, that in the marketplace the better mousetrap seldom wins. It is awfully hard to displace an accepted technology, which has in place a huge infrastructure, immense knowledge-base and has been proven to work, with a new technology that promises to do a better job.
